Prompted by the impending water scarcity in Flanders (limited possibilities for pumping up groundwater, increasing periods of drought), TRANSfarm wants to explore the possibilities of maximally recovering rainwater at the pilot facility, collected in water basins, and using it on site for various applications on a small scale. TRANSfarm is thinking of the following applications:

Installation of floating solar panels on the water basin for local, renewable energy production, including local energy use.
Use of the collected rainwater in an aquaculture facility.
Use of the collected rainwater for a 'smart' irrigation system
…

The intention is to explore and validate these (and possibly other) application possibilities for rainwater in the vicinity of the TRANSfarm test farm, in their mutual relationship/combination. In this way, a pilot set-up can be used to examine the extent to which these applications for reusing rainwater can create added value on a small scale and can lead to a positive business case and possibly to new earning models for the construction of water basins. If successful, Flemish agricultural companies could then eventually adopt this model for recuperating rainwater in part or in full.
